Nature for Climate Peatland Grant Scheme
Dorset Peat Partnership Historic Environment Assessments
Project Summary: The Dorset Peat Partnership (DPP) is a collaborative conservation initiative restoring degraded peatlands across Dorset to improve biodiversity, water management, and carbon storage. DPP identified numerous sites that were suitable for peatland restoration and Heritage Impact Assesments for each site were required during the development phase to identify constraints and guide the design.
Fearn Heritage Role Fearn Heritage used Natural England's newly developed guidance on producing HIAs for peat restoration to create an efficient workflow and report structure. Local Historic Environment Records were assessed as well as map data, LiDAR and, where available, multispectral images. These were used to identify heritage assets and assess their significance. Assets of high or unknown significance, and areas of proposed high impact were visited to fill knowledge gaps. The data was inputted into a GIS project which could be easily queried to answer the aims of the project. Final reports with tailored mitigation advice and guidance for contractors were produced.
